The fire Element

Our fire element represents fulfillment - the expression and integration of our being.

Its archetype is that of the sorcerer, who desires intimacy (with another and / or the divine), and values compassion, intuition, and communication

The fire element is associated with the season of summer, and represents the warmth and joy that this time of year provides.

Just like fire itself, the fire element holds the energy of rapid and upward movement, and provides a sense of warmth and light.

It symbolizes the energy of inspiration, spirituality, love, excitement, and joy.

The Fire Element is associated with:

  • the color red,

  • the heart, pericardium, small intestine, and triple burner,

  • the blood and blood vessels

  • and its associated emotion is joy.

When the fire phase is in balance we live in both passion and calm.

Yet, just as fire warms, it can also burn and consume.

When the Fire Phase is not in balance:

  • We might see febrile disease, or any disease with a rapid course and strong symptoms.

  • We can see diseases of the mind and spirit, such as mania, OCD, dementia, or lack of passion and purpose.

  • Pain, itching, cardiovascular disease, and addictions can all be seen as fire pathologies as well,

  • Or certain skin diseases, especially when linked with emotional pain.

  • Additionally, as fire’s associated emotion is joy, when out of balance this can transmute into frenzy or overexcitement.

Some ways to support the Fire Element of your body:

  • Listening to quiet, peaceful music.

  • Mindful walking, breathing, journal writing or prayer.

  • Avoid repeatedly returning to situations or relationships that you know disturb you mental clarity or emotions.

  • Foods with a bitter flavor, such as bitter melon or bitter greens, can support the heart and fire element.

What influences the Fire Phase?

The fire element is nourished by the wood element (wood generates fire by providing fuel for combustion), and the water element restrains the fire element (by quenching it).

Therefore when we see issues arising in the Fire Element, we will also often look to see if it is being properly nourished by its parent element (Wood) or if its is being insulted by its controlling element (Water).

The Fire Element is nourished by the Wood Element, and can be insulted by the Water Element.

The Five Elements

The 5 Elements (Phases) are nothing but symbols to describe the different movements that transpire within the dynamics of yin & yang, and the energetics and processes that occur within our human physiology - as the forces that govern and rule the natural world, are the same forces at play within our individual bodies.

At its core, Chinese medicine is a holistic medicine that originated from looking at and observing nature.

It is a science of symbolism.

Each of the 5 elements captures a certain movement, a certain motion, observed in the natural world; and each has its own energy characteristics within us (physically, emotionally, and spiritually).

In this medicine, health is understood as a state of being in harmony with nature, and aligned with the greater natural world.

We all embody all 5 elements, and when in health they are all mutually enhancing and regulating.

When out of balance, certain elements can become destructive and insulting or deficient and stifled.

Understanding the elements can help reveal where our bodies or psyches are needing support at any given moment in time.
